Report: Immigrants, homeless used by asbestos contractors

DETROIT (AP) — A newspaper says contractors are using immigrants, ex-cons, homeless people and teenagers to remove material containing asbestos from of aging buildings. Dan Somenauer, business manager of Taylor-based Abatement Workers Regional Local 207, says some of his members before joining the union said they worked for companies that paid substandard wages and hired homeless workers.

NIU faculty to form union, seeks voice in school decisions

The union represents 100,000 elementary school teachers and other classroom employees as well as faculty and staff at several Illinois universities and community colleges. NIU support staff unionized last summer after clerical and other administrative assistants raised concerns about wages and complained they had not had a raise for several years.
