McAllister wins 5th District congressional seat

McAllister, who largely self-funded his campaign, easily beat establishment candidate Neil Riser, a state senator, in a special runoff election for the vacant 5th District seat. The Louisiana secretary of state's office said turnout in the district was low at 19 percent of registered voters. McAllister, a businessman with multiple companies, ran as a political outsider, capitalizing on frustration with politicians and Congress.
