April starts aptly: Showers expected this afternoon

Despite a pleasant morning, April will begin aptly later today with a chance of showers this afternoon and evening, the National Weather Service said. Today’s mild weather -- temperatures are expected to be near 60 degrees -- won’t last long, though, as a strong cold front sweeps eastward late this afternoon, meteorologist Charlie Foley said. Between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., winds are expected to strengthen with gusts between 40 and 50 miles per hour reported in some areas.
