Resting Brett Gardner 'a little beat up'

Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner did not start the first half finale Sunday against Minnesota, the Journal News reports. Gardner is not injured and is available for New York manager Joe Girardi, who just wanted to give him the day off. "Just a day off," Girardi said. "He’s played every day for us. He’s a little beat up, but he’s available to me. I just thought, if I can buy him an extra day, I’ll buy him that extra day." Batting .272 on the year with 13 stolen bases and 52 runs scored, Gardner has gone 5 for 37 (.135) over his last 11 games.
